Gabriel Toro
Gabriel is a figurative artist based in Edinburgh, originally from Budapest, where he trained at the Hungarian University of Fine Arts.
Growing up in Eastern Europe, He carried a lot of fear and confusion around being gay, something that continues to influence his work today. A lot of what he makes is about male beauty, attraction, gay relationships, queer identity, and the strange mix of vulnerability and confidence that comes with being seen.
Gabriel mostly paints men he has actually known, so there’s usually a real person and a real story behind the work. Real attraction, real connection, sometimes real heartbreak. Gabriel thinks part of what he is doing now is giving space and seriousness to things he once felt he had to hide.
He works mainly in oil, charcoal and watercolour, and he is still very attached to traditional ways of making art: drawing from life, studying anatomy, and really looking at the male body that I enjoy observing so much.
Someone once described his work as “where Eastern European academic training meets Western queer identity,” and he thinks that captures it pretty well.
